First and foremost is the question: What are the outcomes that you are committed to in a family approach interaction? At EffectiveArts, we say there are four -- all equal and simultaneous, like a constellation:
FAMILY APPROACH OUTCOMES
· The family consents to donation,
· The family is taken care of,
· The family is satisfied with the process (whether they say yes or no), and
· The patient’s wishes are honored and respected.
These are NOT either-or... they are each-and. None should be accomplished at the expense of any of the others. Clearly the ideal result of a family approach is that all four outcomes are fulfilled.
FAMILY APPROACH OUTCOMES AS ADVOCACY
Each of the Outcomes can be thought of in terms of advocating for a party involved in the process (a stakeholder):
· The family consents to donation. (Requester is advocating for the recipients.)
· The family is taken care of. (Requester is advocating for the patient’s family.)
· The family is satisfied with the process. (Requester is advocating for donation in the wider community, since if the family is satisfied they will speak well of the donation process and donation personnel—whether or not they themselves donate.)
· The patient’s wishes are honored and respected. (Requester is advocating for the patient.)
