| Family approach coordinators
play an essential front-line role in the organ procurement process. Coordinators
deal directly with families, and the outcome of their efforts can result in organ
donations, which results in lives saved. The mission of each Organ Procurement
Organization (OPO) is realized (or not) based on the work of those who approach
the families. It is essential, therefore, for coordinators to receive ongoing
training of the utmost quality and real-world application. Years of collaboration
between EffectiveArts, an innovative training and development organization, and
donation organizations across the US have resulted in a comprehensive program,
the Advanced Family Approach Training. The training is a three-day intensive that
uses uniquely-trained professional actors to create scenarios for coordinators
to practice realistic family approaches and receive coaching. These scenarios
are vastly different from "role-play," and are reported by participants
to be indistinguishable from real life. The aim of this state-of-the-art educational
experience is to increase the consent rate of each and every coordinator.
Other intentions include: - Turning OPOs into learning communities
so that they can self-generate increased family approach effectiveness,
-
Enhancing coordinators' skills in their interactions with their hospital partners,
- Increasing
coordinators' interest in and skills around using assessment as a powerful guidance
tool, and
- Increasing coordinators' interest in self-care, and their
ability to maintain their own health and well-being.
Our four
Family Approach Intentions specify equally
and simultaneouslyadvocating for the (potential) donor family, advocating
for the recipient, advocating for donation in the wider community, and advocating
for the (potential) donor. Special attention is also paid to the vital topic of
donor designation. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: For more
